How to Manage Files with SmartFTP

Once connected to a server via SmartFTP, it is important to understand the ways in which files can be managed within this environment.

An FTP connection must be established in order to manage files via FTP.

Viewing, Editing and Changing Permissions of Files

To View a File

  1. Right-click on the selected file.
  2. Choose View With.
  3. Choose a program listed as an installed program. Please note that any changes made in the view option cannot be saved. In order for changes to a file to be made, you must be in the edit option.

To Edit a File

  1. Right-click on the selected file.
  2. Choose Edit With.
  3. Choose a program listed as an installed program.
  4. After making changes to a file, be sure to click Save Changes so that the new modifications can be re-uploaded.

To Alter the Permissions of a File

  1. Right-click on the selected file.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Select the Permissions tab and apply permissions to your liking.
  4. When done, click OK.

Renaming a File or Folder

To rename a file or folder:

  1. Right click on the item.
  2. Select Rename from the drop-down menu.
    • Alternatively, you can select the file/folder and press the F2 key on your keyboard.
  3. Edit the name of the file or folder.

Adding a Folder

To add a folder:

  1. Click the Add Folder button on the toolbar.
  2. Name the folder in the pop up window.
  3. Click OK.

Moving Files and Folders

To move any file or folder, click on the item and drag it to the desired location. A file or folder can be moved from one section to another or within the same section.

Several items may be moved/transferred in a group by highlighting them and then clicking and dragging the highlighted selection to the appropriate location.

If moving files from the local section to the remote section, files will be copied rather than moved. This will be covered in greater detail in the next section: Transfer Files.
