Google Apps Email Walkthrough

Google Apps allows users the ability to manage their domain mail on Google mail servers. This article will walk you through how to create and access new email addresses from the Google Apps Admin Console. 

The domain being used must be verified prior to using any of the Google Apps services. For instructions on how to set up and verify your Google Apps account, please read the following article:
Configuring your domain with Google Apps will change your MX records. This means your email will be hosted by Google and will no longer work on the HostGator server. Consequently, email accounts configured on the HostGator server must be recreated under your Google Apps account.

Accessing Google Apps Email

To access mail through your Google Apps account:

  1. Log into your Google Admin Console at http://google.com/a/your_domain.com (replace your_domain.com with you actual domain name).
  2. Once logged in, click on the Google Apps icon.
  3. Select the Gmail option.
  4. Your direct link to Gmail will be provided at the top of the page beneath Gmail in the following format: http://mail.google.com/a/your_domain.com.
    • Click Edit next to the link to enable a custom URL.
  5. Click the link to access your Gmail account.

Adding Email Accounts to Google Apps

Adding a user in the Google Apps Admin Console will automatically set up a Google Apps email account for the added user. To add a user:

  1. Log into your Google Admin Console at http://google.com/a/your_domain.com (replace your_domain.com with you actual domain name).
  2. Click the Add Users link.
  3. In the pop-up that appears, select Add a user manually and then click Continue.
  4. Provide the new user's name and email address.
  5. If you would like to set a password for the user, click Set Password; otherwise, a temporary password will be generated.
  6. Click the Create New User button.

Once the user is added, a pop-up will appear with the user's username, email address and password. You can email or print the instructions for the user.

Note: The email account will not become active until the new user logs into Google Apps.

Email Access for Non-Admin Users

Non-admin users can access their Google Apps email account by going to Google Apps > Gmail in the Google Apps dashboard or by going to mail.google.com and logging in with the username and password provided by the administrator.
