Default Address, Catchall

What is the default address?

It is a catchall mailbox that receives all emails written to a non-existing name @ your domain.

Why is this disabled?

The Default Address is disabled by default due to the high possibility of it being misconfigured which can result in your default address becoming flooded with spam emails.

How do I enable it?

Please contact HostGator via phone or live chat and ask for your "catchall email to be enabled."

Once enabled, what do I do?

Login to cPanel and click the "Default Address" icon. Go through the drop down and make sure every domain's Current Setting is ":fail: No Such User Here".

If the settings are wrong, or you are not sure, follow these steps.

  1. Select the first domain name in the drop-down.
  2. Choose "Discard with error to sender (at SMTP time)".
  3. Set the "Failure Message (seen by sender):" to No such person at this address.
  4. Click the Change button.
  5. Repeat for every name in the drop-down.

This will prevent your account from filling up with unnoticed spam.

If you want to set it up so that it allows all misrouted or misaddressed emails to be sent to a particular email address, rather than bouncing, then please follow the directions in our article Catchall email address, how to set.

We turn off the catchall email feature to protect you from unwanted spam and (even worse) inbox flooding which uses inodes and disk space.

If you want the feature turned on, just call or email us.

Any agent here can turn it on for you. You can start using catchall immediately.

Once the catchall email is activated, is there an option for no failure message seen by sender?
I want to receive catchall mail without any bounce-back message sent to the sender.

HostGator
It already works that way by default.

When you enable catchall, it turns all undeliverable emails into deliverable emails. Thus, no more "user does not exist" bounce-backs. Try it out.

in roundcube web mail nothing is getting delivered to my "inbox" folder but if I create another e-mail account e-mails will be delivered to the folder that is created for that new account. Is the "inbox" reserved for the catchall(default) account? If so do I need to enable the catchall account in order to use the "inboxes" in the web mail clients?

HostGator
The problem sounds like you are trying to manage everything from your cPanel user name's mail box. Not good.

Please log out of your webmail and go back to cPanel.

In cPanel, never use the "Webmail" icon. Avoid it!

Use the "Email Accounts" icon instead, and access webmail from within "Email Accounts".
