Bandwidth policy and prices

Bandwidth is the amount of data that can be transferred to and from your account in one month. Every time someone downloads a 10 kB file from your website, they use 10 kB of bandwidth from your account.

Also, every time someone visits your site, they are downloading the home page and use that much bandwidth.

Bandwidth is reset on the 1st of every month, except for VPS. VPS bandwidth is calculated by billing cycle, not calendar month.

Shared Web
You do not need to request more bandwidth, as we do not limit this feature for you.

Reseller
If you want more bandwidth or disk space you must upgrade or order a new hosting package.

VPS
If you want more bandwidth or disk space you must contact sales@hostgator.com with a request to upgrade to a higher level plan.

Dedicated
You can buy extra bandwidth for 30 cents per gig (pre-paid). Please email sales@hostgator.com to pre-pay for bandwidth.

We charge 50 cents per gig for bandwidth overages. Overage reports come monthly from our datacenter, and you will be automatically invoiced.

Does email use bandwidth?

HostGator
Yes, both incoming and outgoing email messages use bandwidth.

Kumar
I have an reseller starter kit from Host Gator, you offerd 50GB hard disk spave -500GB bandwith

so you mean

space 50GB/Year &
bandwidth 500GB/month ? Am I right

HostGator
No, disk space is not per year. Rather, disk space is a physical limit.

You can use any amount of the server's disk space from 1 KB to 50 GB.

Bandwidth is a monthly rate. This limits the amount of uploading and downloading of content from your account, per month.

Mark
There's something I don't understand.

If I get a $9.99 shared hosting, the bandwidth is unlimited. But if I pay $374 a month for a Pro dedicated server, I do have to worry about bandwidth.

Shouldn't be this the other way?

HostGator
"Unlimited" does not mean "infinite".

Pro Dedicated Server have 2,500 GB Bandwidth
BG meaning gig bit or gig byte ?

HostGator
Bytes. We wouldn't talk about disk space and bandwidth in bits.

Can people upload customized music for download? If so, is there a file size limit?

My final question would be that should someone's website take off and they sell quite a few music files, at what point would you want them to consider a dedicated server?

HostGator
File storage is only allowed on a VPS or dedicated server. On those plans, there is no file size limit (but you do have a total disk space limit).

If your store is on a VPS and the pages start to get slow or crash (500 error) from too many visitors (too much traffic for the site to handle), then it is time to upgrade to a dedicated server.

How can I tell when I am reaching the limit of Bandwith?

HostGator
You can monitor the bandwidth inside cPanel and WHM.

When a site exceeds its allowance, the site will display a warning message which says "Bandwidth Exceeded".

Steve
You said "File storage is only allowed on a VPS or dedicated server." I'm not sure I understand. Suppose I sign up for the hatchling or baby plan. I can't place any files on my account? Or I can put only web page data on my account, but nothing else? Or I can't place files for download on my account? Please clarify. I don't get it, but I am new at this.

HostGator
You may only have web files on a shared or reseller account; no personal storage of movies, photos, literature, and music.

You may have any files, personal or professional, on a VPS or Dedicated server.
