IP address - static vs dynamic, public vs private, shared vs dedicated

An IP address is the location of a computer on the internet.

Example: 123.45.67.89

Here are some terminologies for IP addresses.

first octet - the first number of the IP (123)
second octet - the second number of the IP (45)
third octet - the third number of the IP (67)
fourth octet - the fourth and last number of the IP (89)

Static means the IP address never changes as long as you stay with the same provider or same server.
Dynamic means the IP address can change from time-to-time.

Public means the IP address can be visited from any computer in the world.
Private means the IP address can only be used by those on the same network.

Shared means other people use your IP address for their connection or websites.
Dedicated means no one else uses your IP address for their connection or websites.

HostGator always provides static, public IPs on our servers. We offer shared by default, and dedicated by request. [Order Now]

(We do not provide a dedicated IP address for your personal computer's internet connection or network connection. For that, please contact your internet service provider.)

I need separate c-class IPs.
You can get those by ordering a special SEO hosting plan.

Advanced: The class identifies the range of your IP address and the default subnet mask.

A class - 0 to 127 with default mask of 255.0.0.0
B class - 128 to 191 with default mask of 255.255.0.0
C class - 192 to 223 with default mask of 255.255.255.0
D class - 224 to 247 (not currently used)
E class - 248 to 255 (not currently used)

How can we obtain a dynamic ip ?

HostGator
HostGator does not offer dynamic IPs.

fran
Can we change our class-c ip address.

HostGator
No, we cannot provide IPs with any promise of separate c-class IPs or a change in the 1st, 2nd, or 3rd octet. You can order a dedicated IP, but it may be similar to your shared IP (only different at the 4th octet).

Only our SEO Hosting program offers separate c-class IPs, and you still don't get to pick your IPs.

Can I have more than one IP associated with baby plans?
(to have hosted two different domains with SSL support)

HostGator
No, you are limited to only 1 IP and 1 SSL on a shared web hosting plan.

To have more than 1 IP, you will need a reseller plan or higher.

I don't understand the shared IP. If you have multiple domains, lets say abcd.com and efgh.com, are both pointing to the same IP? How does it determine which site to pull up? Or does it just automatically do it?

HostGator
The IP is simply an address to the server. The server will handle the rest, automatically.

Is there a way to tell if a specific IP is static or dynamic?

WisTex
Not really. Although most internet service providers (ISPs) give out dynamic IP addresses to home users, while reserving static ones for customers willing to pay for a static IP, which are typically businesses. But there is no way to know just by looking at an IP. Only the internet service provider that allocated the IP would know, and they are likely to only tell the customer using the IP that information.
