Legal and Acceptable Content

Below are commonly asked questions regarding acceptable content for websites hosted with HostGator. For more information, we recommend reading section 2 of our Terms of Service.

Do you allow sites to advertise for money?

Yes, we allow sites to have commercial advertisements.

Can I use advertisement banners?

Static HTML banners are allowed, but a script-based banners use the server processor and can crash the server, especially if the banner loads on many different pages.

Do you allow adult sites?

Yes, we allow adult sites. They must be legal in the United States of America.

Examples of Unacceptable Material

The following material is unacceptable and not allowed for all websites hosted with HostGator:

  • IRC
  • Pirated software (Warez)
  • Hacker focused sites, archives, programs
  • Bank debenture, trading programs, Forex

Shared and Reseller Accounts

The following is not acceptable on HostGator shared servers:

  • Storing files - Our shared servers are not for storing or archiving data, files, videos, mp3s or anything else. While we try to be flexible, it is not permissible to store 80 gigs of videos on a Baby plan.

  • Media streaming - HTTP stream has a defined beginning and end. Live stream joins in the middle of a broadcast, like tv, radio or webcam. We support HTTP stream on shared servers; however, live stream is not supported.
