What operating systems will be available for my VPS?

CentOS 5

Currently, we are offering CentOS 5 (Linux).  When you order a VPS, CentOS 5 is installed by default.

You can chose from the following:

  • Virtuozzo (VZ Power Panel)
  • Virtuozzo (VZ Power Panel) and WHM/cPanel
  • Virtuozzo (VZ Power Panel) and Plesk

There are no Windows VPS plans.

VPS hosting with cPanel or Plesk is considered fully managed hosting, which includes support for server related issues.  VPS hosting with VZ Power Panel only is considered unmanaged, and come with limited support from HostGator.

Other Operating Systems

We offer a few alternative Operating System choices for Virtual Private Servers. However, these offerings do not have control panels and will not receive the full support offered to standard VPSes. Only new VPSes with CentOS5 are eligible for control panel installations and our fully managed support service. Persons seeking to use these Operating Systems should be experienced Linux Administrators or have one in their employ.

Available Operating Systems:

  • Ubuntu 11.04
  • Fedora Core 15
  • Debian 6.0
  • Suse 11.4
  • CentOS 4

Requesting a VPS with an alternative Operating System

Customers who are interested on one of these alternate operating systems should order a VPS online with VZ only.   Please do not select one with cPanel or Plesk.

Once you have completed your order, please send an email to support@hostgator.com stating which of the Operating Systems you would like, and the domain name associated with the VPS you want the alternative operating systems on.

Important Notes:

  • cPanel and Plesk only work with CentOS 5.
  • VPS hosting with alternate operating systems are considered unmanaged, and come with limited support from HostGator.

Hello, if a client wants to have the Ubuntu instead of CentOS installed, do we need to go with a dedicated server or can we take one of the packages offered (vps) with VZ only ?

Yes, you can order Ubuntu on a VPS. Simply order a VPS with VZ only and follow the instructions in the article above.
