How to Use the Backup Manager - Plesk

This article covers the following procedures for using the Backup Manager in step by step detail:

Note: These examples are using Plesk 11.5. The steps will be the same for other versions of Plesk, however, the button locations may be different.

Create a Backup of the Plesk Control Panel

To create a new backup:

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains tab:

  2. Select Backup Manager:

  3. From the Tools menu select the Back Up icon:

  4. Configure the following settings:
    • Prefix to backup name
    • Store backup in the server repository or in a custom FTP repository
    • Email address to be notified upon completion of the backup task
    • Whether just the domain configuration should be backed up, or the domain configuration and site content
    • Whether the domain should be suspended until completion of the backup task (this prevents site changes from being made while the backup is in progress, but the site may be down for an extended length of time)

  5. Click Back Up.

Restore or Download a Plesk Backup

To restore a backup with Plesk:

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains tab:

  2. Select Backup Manager:

  3. From either the Server Repository or the Personal FTP Repository click the name of the backup file to be restored:

  4. Check the applicable restore options:
    • Domain Configuration
    • Virtual host content
    • Mail
    • Databases
  5. Specify whether the domain should be suspended until restoration is complete.
  6. Specify an email address to be notified upon completion of the restoration task (optional).
  7. Click Restore.

To download a Plesk backup:

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains tab:

  2. Select Backup Manager:

  3. From either the Server Repository or the Personal FTP Repository click the green arrow next to the preferred backup file.
  4. Either specify a password or uncheck the Use password protection box.
  5. Click OK.
  6. When the pop-up box appears choose Save File, then click OK.

Scheduled Backup Settings

To change the settings for your scheduled backups:

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains tab:

  2. Select Backup Manager:

  3. From the Tools menu select Scheduled Backup Settings:

  4. Check the box to Activate this backup task.
  5. Configure the following options:
    • Backup period (daily, weekly, or monthly)
    • Start backup creation time
    • Prefix to backup name
    • Store backup in the server repository or in a custom FTP repository
    • Set a maximum number of backups in repository (this value should be set to 1 for users in our shared hosting environment in consideration of the shared disk space on the server)
    • Email address to be notified should any errors arise during the backup task
    • Whether just the domain configuration should be backed up, or the domain configuration and site content

Upload Files to the Server Repository

To upload a file to the Server Repository:

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains tab:

  2. Select Backup Manager:

  3. Select Upload Files to Server Repository:

  4. Select Browse and navigate to the backup file. To upload multiple files select Upload more files.
  5. Select whether backup files may be uploaded without a valid signature (select this option only if the backup source is trusted).
  6. Set a password to protect the backup file if preferred:

  7. Click OK.

Personal FTP Repository Settings

If you are going to use an FTP server for storing backup files, you should specify its settings in the Personal FTP Repository.

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains tab:

  2. Select Backup Manager:

  3. Select Personal FTP Repository Settings:

  4. Configure the following:
    • FTP server's IP address or host name
    • Directory on the server where you want to store backup files
    • User name and password for access to the FTP account
    • Password that Plesk will use for backup protection

  5. Click OK.

Database Backup Repository

To create a database backup perform the following:

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains tab:

  2. Select Backup Manager:

  3. Select Database Backup Repository:

  4. From the Tools menu select Back Up:

  5. Select the database to backup and specify a backup file name:

  6. Click OK.

To restore a database backup file perform the following:

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains tab:

  2. Select Backup Manager:

  3. Select Database Backup Repository:

  4. Select the checkbox next to the backup file being restored, and select Restore:

  5. Check the box to Confirm the restoration. (Note: All existing database data will be replaced. We recommend backing up the existing database before restoring.):

  6. Click OK.

To download a database backup file perform the following:

  1. Go to the Websites & Domains tab:

  2. Select Backup Manager:

  3. Select Database Backup Repository:

  4. From the Database backup files select the green arrow next to the backup file being restored.
  5. Choose Save File to download a copy of the backup file to your local machine.
