On our cPanel servers, we are compatible with WHM/cPanel certificates (alternatively you can use Apache + Mod_SSL certificates). When you order your new SSL certificate, you will need to know this information. If you do not have a dedicated server with HostGator, you will be unable to install your own SSL certificates (because the installation of a SSL certificate requires ROOT access to the server). Also, each SSL certificate requires that a dedicated IP address is installed so the SSL may function. All SSL certificates purchased from HostGator will be installed for free.
Please note that shared plans (Baby and Business) can only support one IP address and one SSL certificate. If you need more than one of either, you will need to purchase a second plan, or upgrade to a reseller plan. (All reseller, SEO, VPS and dedicated plans support multiple IP's and SSL's.)
Currently, we offer a free SSL certificate and dedicated IP address with the purchase of a Business plan. We do not offer a free IP address with the purchase of an SSL if you have any other plan. Dedicated IPs may be purchased at www.hostgator.com/ip.php.
Anytime you need a third party SSL certificate installed and you cannot install it yourself, you must have our administrators install it for you for a $10.00 one time installation fee. However, we will install your SSL free of charge on all managed dedicated servers.
To have a third party SSL installed, you must follow these directions:
- A Certificate Signing Request form (CSR) must be filled out. A link to this form is located on the SSL installation request form or your can visit this link
https://secure.hostgator.com/generatecsr.php
**Please note that all information on the CSR page MUST match the whois for that domain or the SSL will not get issued. - Once you fill out the CSR form and have received the results from our administrators, give the results to your current SSL certificate provider. The SSL provider will generate and give back an SSL Certificate as well as an SSL CA Certificate (Trusted Authority). These two pieces of information will be encrypted text documents. Typically they will be provided via email as compressed (zipped) attachments.
- Now that you have the SSL certificate and the SSL CA certificate, you are ready to fill out the SSL installation form. When you received the results for your CSR form, we gave you the RSA Private Key to submit on the installation form. When you complete filling out this form, click on Submit to complete your request.
- You will be invoiced $10 for the SSL installation charge, unless you have a managed dedicated server, which in that case there is no charge (free installation). Once your invoice is created (you will be emailed when it is ready), please login to your Client Area to pay the invoice.
