Why does shared have more space than reseller?

We are offer a reseller package so you can sell your own hosting plans; remember we do not allow anyone to resell the basic webhosting plans.

Most sites don't need unlimited disk space, and you can offer other services to your clients - like webdesign or advertising.

The technical reason is because of our inode limit. An inode is a count of every file and folder. Shared plans have one primary user that adds content. Reseller plans, however, can have many users, all adding content and creating more files and folders. The higher the inode count, the higher the file system overhead and more resources are used.

I see a lot of other reseller websites offering "unlimited" disk space and bandwidth for every hosting plan they offer from $1.95 and up. Is this a little "sleight of hand" advertising in your opinion, since they know that very many customers won't need a lot of bandwidth, and never will? I would look in my Cpanel to see just what my limitations are, if I purchased an unlimited amount of bandwidth and disk space for just a buck 95. Just doesn't strike me as legitimate.

My questions then are these: If I create packages with unlimited bandwidth and diskspace in WHM, since it is physically impossible to assign "unlimited" bandwidth and space in reality, can I create packages with unlimited resources, advertise them as such, and just purchase more bandwidth as needed? Is that how these resellers are offering "unlimited" resources at such cheap prices?

I won't run out of resources on my Reseller account if I create packages with unlimited bandwidth and disk space resources will I, since it is physically impossible to allot an unlimited amount of resources to anything.

Thanks in advance.

Yes, that is one common way to sell unlimited disk space. You should read about overselling in our blog.

However, VPS and dedicated server owners can actually create cPanels with "unlimited" for disk space and bandwidth. So, these are much better plans for overselling.

Like you mentioned, reseller plans cannot assign "unlimited" for disk space and bandwidth settings, so you would have to put a realistic number and then adjust the numbers as your users need more.

RE: William's question:

If we offer unlimited disk space and bandwidth, What is the recommended settings for disk space and bandwidth, etc we should to start with?

Thanks

HostGator
You give them 'unlimited'.

On a VPS or dedicated server, you can set the disk space and bandwidth limits to the word "unlimited".

On a reseller plan, you cannot set disk space or bandwidth to 'unlimited', so don't promise your customers unlimited disk space and bandwidth.
