Convert an Addon Domain to its Own cPanel and Vice Versa

Users with access to WHM can move domains over from their cPanel accounts and make them into the primary domain on another cPanel and vice versa. As long as this is a process intended for being on the same server, the user can use the following instructions on how to go about these tasks, by referring to the applicable section listed below:

Convert an Addon Domain to a Separate cPanel

To convert an addon domain from one cPanel to another cPanel:

  1. Download the content of your addon domain to your local PC.
  2. Backup any associated database(s) by exporting them. For instructions on how to do so, please refer to the following article:
  3. Go into the original cPanel and remove the addon domain from under the Addon Domains icon. (You do not need to delete the original content or original databases.)
  4. Create a new account inside your WHM. Fill out the form, using the old addon domain name as the domain. Click the Create button. For more information on creating a cPanel account, please refer to the following article:
  5. Once the new cPanel is ready, upload the content of your old addon domain to this new cPanel, in the public_html folder. (When using FTP to upload, connect to the cPanel's IP address and login with the new cPanel's username and password.)
  6. Log into the cPanel you are keeping and restore the database backup(s). To restore the database, you will need to re-create it, and then import your database backup. For steps on how to do so, please refer to the following article:
  7. Reconfigure any database connections.This ensures that the database name and username being correct regardless if having been changed.

Your site will only be down as long as it takes to complete these steps. There is no need to change your name servers.


Convert a cPanel to an Addon Domain

To convert a primary domain on a cPanel into an addon domain on another cPanel:

  1. Download the content of your cPanel domain to your local PC.
  2. Backup any associated database(s) by exporting them. For instructions on how to do so, please refer to the following article:
  3. Terminate an account inside your WHM, and select the domain you are moving.
  4. Once the cPanel is completely deleted, go inside the primary cPanel and click the Addon Domains icon under the Domains section.
  5. Enter the domain name where it says New Domain Name.
  6. Fill out the remainder of the form and note the document root. The document root looks like /public_html/newdomain.com/ .
  7. Click the Add Domain button.
  8. Upload the content of your domain to the cPanel you are keeping in the noted document root folder.
  9. Log into the cPanel you are keeping and restore the database backup(s). To restore the database, you will need to re-create it, and then import your database backup. For steps on how to do so, please refer to the following article:
  10. Reconfigure any database connections. This ensures that the database name and username being correct regardless if having been changed.

Your site will only be down as long as it takes to complete these steps. There is no need to change your name servers.

Note: This process does NOT transfer emails to the other cPanel. This only moves the website.
