Create a temporary one page site

Also known as a landing page or an under-construction page.

This is the perfect solution for a temporary place holder site. The site tells visitors that your real site is coming soon, and lists important information. Typically, you will include contact and order information useful for offline contact (i.e. via phone or postal mail).

How do I create that page?

The easiest option is to use the File Manager found in your control panel. (These instructions are for shared and reseller accounts, but similar steps can be used with any type of hosting.)

  1. Login to cPanel and click the File Manager icon.
  2. On the pop-up, choose to go to the Web Root (public_html/www) folder. Hit the Go button.
  3. Here you might see cgi-bin and maybe some other files. Go to the top and click the New File button.
  4. For the new file name, type "index.html" (without the quotation marks) and click the Create New File button.
  5. Look for the new file you created in the main list [screenshot]. Right click the icon for index.html and choose HTML Edit from the drop down.
  6. Now you have a WYSIWYG editor which makes web design seem so simple.

Tip: To insert images onto your page, you must upload them to the public_html directory first.

  1. Inside the file manager, go to the top and click the Upload icon.
  2. On the new window, click a Browse button and locate the images on your PC.
  3. Double click the image when you find it, and wait for the blue bar to reach 100% Complete.
  4. Click "Back to /home/your-user-name/public_html". The image file will now appear along with your index.html file.
  5. Go back to the HTML Edit tool and click the Insert Image icon [screenshot].
  6. Check the box for your image and click the Insert button at the bottom.
    [screenshot]
    [screenshot]
  7. Go to the top left of the editor and click the Save icon (second from left).
  8. Go preview your site. Make changes as needed.

Note: This does require your domain to have the HostGator name servers we provided in a New Account email. After you change your name servers, it can take up to 48 hours to see your new site.

How do I remove this page?

You can remove the page by deleting the file you created in the previous steps. You can also replace it with a new version with the same file name instead.

Yes, OK, but how do you paste a formatted piece of text into the one-pager site?

HostGator
If you are using the HTML Edit tool, then you can copy and paste the text directly into your site design.

If you have HTML code for a page, and you want to publish it, then do NOT use HTML Edit. Use regular Edit or Code Edit and then paste the HTML code.

I have the index.html file uploaded, but I don't know how to do step #8: "go preview your site" ... every time I try to go to my site (at the doman name I registered through HostGator), it is not found. What ??

HostGator
Make sure to apply HostGator's nameservers (DNS) to your new domain name.

If you are seeing a page, but it is not the page you expected, then try refreshing your browser.

Finally, call us or join our live chat. Talking to a live representative is the best way for us to advise you.

I did this exactly as stated above. When I uploaded the first image it was way too large so I deleted it, resized it and then re-uploaded it with a different name.

Now the image shows up in my public_html folder but not in the html editor. When I go to step 5 above the image simply isn't there.

HostGator
You likely just need to close the HTML Editor and reopen it. You may also try signing out of cPanel and then signing back in.

Hi,
Just wanted you to know that the screenshots made all the difference for me being able to follow along as you explained what to do. Without the screenshots I would never have felt like I could try it.
thanks again

Hi,
I created a temporary page and it worked fine. But now I've installed Wordpress and want that site to show, but it's still showing the temporary page I created. I tried deleting the 'index.html' and 'default.html' files but it's still showing.

How do I change this?

HostGator
You likely just need to refresh your website.

Another option is to add 'DirectoryIndex' code to your .htaccess file which specifies 'index.php' as your home page.

Search "Directory Index" for that article.

Hi,
how do I upload in this Temporary Page the template I selected?
Should I first save the entire unzipped file into My Pictures?
And then how do I edit the captions?
I tried to paste my text with a few html code items both with
HTML Edit tool and with regular edit tool.
I just wanted to preview the outcome but I could not.
Also the File Manager showed 0 Bites for index html
Thanks.

I just opened a HostGator account and am trying to put in a temporary page with my company logo. I am able to use the HTML editor to put in a "coming soon" note and was able to upload my logo. The logo file shows up in my public_html file but every time I try to insert it on the page, it shows up as a filename but I cannot insert it. I have logged out and logged back into the cpanel and have also refreshed my page. I keep getting the error that the page is not on the server. The logo file is clearly there. Help!

HostGator
Be sure your image has a proper image extension like .jpg or .gif.

The image may be corrupted. Try deleting it and re-uploading it.

I am creating a WP site but I want to get the site working before I move the DNS. Where should the development site be setup to I can view and modify it before going live.

HostGator
Before you move the DNS, the domain won't be using your HostGator hosting, thus it is safe to develop on the HostGator server.

Install WordPress on the domain you plan to use, and you can preview the work with your temporary URL. If you want to see the WordPress site as it will appear, you do need to update its database with said temporary URL. (See "Wordpress Home Fix" for details.)

Hi, I have created a new account in hostgator and I update de namservers in namecheap, but when I put a temporary page in html_public folder with index.php name, if I go to my nameservers using firefox, the page cannot be found. Puting the nameservers in the address bar of my explorer it may resolve my temporary page? or I have to wait to the namservers resolve my domain?

Thanks!

HostGator
You should never type a plain server name into the address bar. (A temporary URL or web-version of the name is fine.)

A server name, a mail server name, or a name server are not intended to be browsed. If you try to, you will get an error page or a generic server page.

I have transferred my domain name. I am building my site with Wordpress. My URL for the site is http://mysite.com/articles
I am not building an under construction page. So, my question is: Have I set the site up incorrectly, since when I go to http://mysite.com I am looking at a HostGator site? What should I do from here before I complete the site and find out that I have set up the directory incorrectly?

HostGator
My best advice is to go ahead and publish your site. The HostGator Website Startup Guide will disappear and you will be able to see what you are making.

To keep your site private, you can password protect your www directory.

Very helpful, thanks a lot :)
