What do I get with an unmanaged VPS? (VZ only)

An unmanaged VPS is any VPS without cPanel or Plesk. Unmanaged plans come with limited support from HostGator.

Notice that Level 1 and 2 VPS are only offered without cPanel; therefore, all of those levels are considered unmanaged.

The following software is included on all unmanaged VPS accounts.

  • Virtuozzo 4.6
  • Perl 5.8.8
  • Python 2.4.3
  • Apache 2.2.3
  • Sendmail 8.13.8

The following software is NOT included on unmanaged VPS accounts and MUST be installed separately and independently by the VPS account holder.

  • MySQL - Not included
  • PHP - Not included
  • Exim - Not included
  • FTP - Not included

Backups:

We still backup unmanaged VPS accounts once a week.

Transfers:

Unfortunately unmanaged VPS accounts do not qualify for the free site transfer, you (the HostGator client) will be responsible for transferring your data.

Control Panel:

Please note that the VZ Power Panel, which VPS servers come with, is not a replacement for the cPanel. The cPanel is what maintains and links Apache and the other software together, whereas the Power Panel is for managing the server as a whole. This means, in order to have a full-fledged web-server like you would get with a cPanel based hosting plan, you would need to manually perform all of the actions that cPanel normally would. Due to the complexity of these operations, we strongly recommend that only advanced Linux users go with an unmanaged VPS.

Email:

Without Exim, there is no email service by default. You must install and configure your own MTA such as Exim or Postfix.

Can Apache be replaced with NGINX? Do you enforce any restrictions on which software can/cannot be installed/removed/changed?

HostGator
Yes, you can install pretty much anything you want. However, questions and problems related to the custom items will not be supported by HostGator.
