FTP Settings and Connection

This FTP information is found in the welcome email we send. (The FTP information is your control panel login).

  • FTP Host/Address: (your ip address or domain name)
  • FTP User: (cPanel/FTP user name)
  • FTP Password: (cPanel/FTP password)
  • Port: 21
  • Path/directory: (blank*)

*Unless you want to automatically load a particular subfolder in FTP. For example, you may want to automatically load the public_html folder if you have cPanel or httpdocs if you have Plesk. See below for more information for important folders.

Important Note: These are generic instructions for all FTP programs. Not all FTP programs operate exactly the same way, although these directions will work on most of them.

For example, some FTP programs will work if you leave the port number empty, while others require that you enter port 21. Just be aware that each program handles the input slightly differently or wants it inputted in a specific way.

If you have not received the second welcome email, please be sure you have paid your initial invoice.

cPanel

Be sure to upload all files and folders inside the public_html directory.
Place your CGI scripts into the cgi-bin directory.

Plesk

Upload files and directories that should be accessible through HTTP protocol to the httpdocs directory, and files that should be transferred securely over SSL protocol belong in the httpsdocs directory.

Too many connections?

Max number of connections from one IP is 8.

I am using Dreamweaver. When I used the IP address instead of the site address for the FTP Host, it worked.

I am currently using Windows and have established an FTP session. However, I'm not seeing the http or https directory. Only the public hmtl and www folders.

I did successfully upload files through the public_html folder. I realize that the directions seem as if I am on Linux, but I am indeed running Windows XP, IE7.

What do you think?

Thanks,

Steve

You have Windows XP at home, but you have Linux hosting with HostGator.

So please use the Linux sections of our knowledge base only. Please ignore any notes for Windows users.

I can almost get all info to show except for images. Not sure what I did wrong.

HostGator
The images may belong in a subfolder. Contact HostGator, and we can offer some advice.

The issue may require you to consult your web designer. If you are the web designer, you will need to go back to your web design program and republish.

Having trouble with my ftp information. I know this sounds so dumb but what is the IP address? I have just created my ftp account here but the software I am trying to use keeps telling me my info is incorrect.

HostGator
You can find your host IP in your welcome email from HostGator, or in cPanel (just scroll down the left hand menu looking for "Dedicated Ip".

I strongly suggest you contact HostGator via phone or live chat for personalized assistance.

What's the path to ftp html when the domain name hasn't yet been connected to hostgator? DNS hasn't been changed on domain name and I'd like to ftp stuff.

HostGator
The path is the same, regardless. Just use the site's IP address instead of the domain for the host.

ceastsin
The IP address is the only way I can get this to work also.

Yahoo! Thanks for the IP address tip. I'm in!

victor Lenus

Wozman
