Can I use FTP as an off server backup?

We don't recommend it, as it can be considered a "file dump" which is against our TOS.

What is file dumping? - A large number of files that are transferred from one place to another without any particular organization, as in copying media or backup files from your computer to our server.

Apparently this isn't a very well known policy because I was just speaking with an agent and inquired why it was prompting me with a message about being unable to upload due to ftp quotas. Apparently my 20+ gigs I planned on sharing w/ friends and family was too much and considered dumping...

Next time I'll do it in 15 gig increments in order to avoid any future conflicts. ;-)

This message about FTP quotas can be related to any kind of problem. We will not normally interrupt your services for 20 GB of upload, unless you are in violation of our TOS.

Unfortunately, I cannot offer more insight without your domain name or ticket number.

Would downloading all the site files from a hostgator.com server to my computer (in order to back up my site) be a violation of TOS?

HostGator
No, that is not a violation of our TOS.

If you download and upload tens of thousands of files every day, or save more than one full backup file on the server, then you will be in violation.
