How do I create email accounts in cPanel?

The same steps work for your primary, addon, and subdomains.

To create an email account:
  1. Login to cPanel and click Email Accounts.
  2. Fill in the name you want and select the domain name from the drop-down.
  3. Type the desired password twice.
  4. Change the quota if you want.
  5. Click Create.

*NOTE: By default you have no email address setup. The main username may look like it is setup as an email, but if you wish to use it, you will need to add it as an email account.

You cannot create emails with a script or SSH.

The email name "shadow" is reserved, and cannot be used for an email address.

We have just set up a new account with you. Our domain will be moved across to you in a week or so. at present i use squirrel mail.

1) when can we set up an email account in our business plan?
2) we prefer the functions of Outlook but would prefer not to have the emails downloaded onto pc and be able to access them on any pc, mobile etc and have them remain on the server
3) how can we esure strict security on a shared server?

1) You can setup immediately. The email accounts will not work until the domain is pointed to the server, but the emails can be prepared and waiting.

2) Use IMAP instead of POP3.

3) Keep your passwords secret and keep your scripts updated to the latest versions.

I setup my email and did the auto config for Outlook Express for POP3 access. When I open Outlook Express everything seems to come up right but when I click send/receive it states that the host "*.hostgator.com" could not be found. What do I need to do to fix it?

Unfortunately, the auto-configure for SSL is not always accurate. Please use the settings we provide in the related article "Outlook / Eudora / Thunderbird / Mac Email / Phone Client Settings".

We will work with cPanel to get the auto-configure updated.

Help me understand email passwords a little better please. I am setting up email account for several people who want to configure their email with different types of software. Some of them use outlook and some of them use mac mail. Can they change their passwords on their own using outlook once mail is configured or do they need to contact me if they want their password changed?

Neither. The individual email users must login to webmail to change their password.

Send them to http://theirdomain.com/webmail and instruct them to login with their full email address and email password. There is a Change Password icon on the screen (where you get to choose between Horde, SquirrelMail and RoundCube).
