Email Troubleshooting

Email Troubleshooting to get your mail working:

Email Troubleshooting

  • Make sure your user name and password is all lowercase.
  • Make sure you have created the email address in your control panel.
  • Change the user name to the full email address. Example: username@domainname.com

Still not working?

  • Change your incoming and outgoing mail servers from mail.yourdomain.com to the ip address listed in your welcome email.

Are you able to receive emails but not send?

If you can receive mail but aren't able to send this means one thing.....

Your internet provider is blocking you from using anyone's outgoing mail servers but their own. Many major ISPs are blocking outgoing emails. The reason they do this is to prevent you from using their internet connection for spamming purposes. You will still be able to send emails, but only by using your ISP's outgoing mail server. Every ISP's outgoing mail address is different, but for the most part they will be mail.yourispname.com. For example, if you had hosting with AOL.com, their outgoing mail server would look like this: mail.aol.com. If mail.yourisp.com does not work and you are still unable to send emails, you will need to call your internet service provider to find out what their outgoing mail server is.

We also have exim running on port 26 for this very reason. A possible work around is to change your outgoing mail to port 26

Are you able to send emails but not receive?

Either your domain is out of disk space, or your e-mail address itself is over quota. You will need to increase the amount of disk space quota to receive mail again.

Does it say "please enter your username and password for the following server" and you are sure you're using the correct information?

Most of our servers have a 30 checks per hour limit. If you hit this limit in any hour you'll be locked out for the rest of the hour. In Outlook or Thunderbird, you will need to click Tools > Options > General and disable where it says "check for new messages every xx minutes". If you do not want to disable it, just set it to check less often. Keep in mind, the more computers you have checking the mail, the quicker you will hit this limit.

How do you 'Change your incoming and outgoing mail servers' ? Where is that on the control panel? I can see my IP on the left hand side of the control panel - no need to check the welcome email, but I don't know how or where to change the mail servers!

HostGator
Those changes are made in your email client, such as Outlook.

Typically, you will go to Tools > Accounts > Edit/Properties > Advanced/Server. There you will find the settings you want.

We have a detailed walkthrough available in the Related Article, "Outlook / Outlook 2003 / Eudora / Thunderbird / Mac Email / Phone Client Settings".

I have lost a very important work email that I sent last night. It's not in my sent folder, trash or drafts folder and the recipient never received it. When I check email via my webmail all mail boxes are empty (despite my Entourage IMAP version being full of email). Could someone point me in the right direction to help resolve this?

HostGator
You are likely checking your webmail in cPanel. This will result in you finding an empty mailbox. The good news is, you are in the wrong mailbox.

To get to the correct mailbox, go to the "Mail" a.k.a. "Email Accounts" icon in cPanel (not the Webmail icon). Then locate your email address in the list and click the Access Webmail button to its right.

Alternately, you can go to your domain.com/webmail site and login with your full email address (not your cPanel username) and password.

I am getting "*****SPAM****" text in my subject line. for That which setting I can use "LOW", "MEDIUM" or "HIGH" with dropdown value in smartermail. I dont want "****SPAM****" in subject line I need original text in subject line for this which setting do?

HostGator
Sounds like you have enabled SpamAssassin. Please read the related article on this.

Basically, SpamAssassin works on a system from 1 to 10, where 1 marks everything as spam, 5 is moderate, and 10 marks nothing as spam.

I am having a problem with my blackberry. After switching to Host Gator, it no longer receives emails. I know the settings on my phone are correct and I am able to send emails from my phone with the same account without a problem. I think what is happening is that the Host Gator mail server thinks the mail is delivered after it sends it to my Outlook client and does not hold it for my Blackberry. I am using IMAP. Is there a server setting I can change?

HostGator
Please contact us via phone or live chat for immediate assistance.

Incoming message are posted in a folder 'myname@mydomain.com', instead of being displayed in my Inbox. How can I solve this ? Thanks

HostGator
Please contact HostGator via email, phone or live chat.

We will need to know what email address, what mail program you use, what incoming protocol are you using (IMAP or POP), what filters have you created, etc.

Is there a security certificate that I can get from hostgator to keep my emails from landing as "SPAM" for the recipient and not in their Inbox?

HostGator
No, there is no email certificate. Rather, you need to create SPF and PTR records for your domain.

Hint: You will have better control of your email reputation on a VPS or Dedicated server.
