In the past, if anyone registered a domain name with Hostgator, we could reverse that registration and get most of our money back within 5 days, per ICANN. This was helpful in case of Fraud or mistakes in registration orders.
The ICANN policy has changed. Effective April 1st, 2009, we are no longer allowed to refund domain names.
If you have trademark issues or copyright violation, then you can request we unregister the offending domain name at any time; however, there is no refund for this.
We apologize for the inconvenience.

I want to start by registering a domain name - and ascertaining whether it is available. I have done this befoe on this site. I am not sure why it seems so difficult this time. I intend to buy a plan, as well.

You should not be having any problems checking the availability. You can click any "Order Now" button and choose the first option "Register New Domain". Type the desired domain in the two blanks and click the [next>>] button. Our site will tell you the availability and alternate options.
