What is the difference between parked, addon, and subdomains?

A subdomain is a second website, with its own unique content, but there is no new domain name. Instead, you use an existing domain name and change the www to another name. The subdomain name looks like forums.domain.com, help.domain.com, help2.domain.com (assuming you already host domain.com).

An addon domain is a second website, with its own unique content. This type does require you to register the new domain name before you can host it. So, if you want to host www.otherdomain.com, this is the solution. Please read before creating an Addon Domain.

A parked domain is NOT a unique website. Instead, it is a masked forward to the primary domain name of your cPanel account, much like a website alias. Parked domains are commonly used when you need a place to park a domain you do not have a website for, when you have more than one domain that should lead to your primary domain, or when you have common misspellings of your domain name that you have registered.

When you create and add on domain for someone how can you prevent him from haveing access to all my files????

HostGator
You should not be creating addon domains for other users.

You can only have one login and one control panel with shared webhosting. If you want to host other people, then you need reseller hosting.

Reseller hosting will allow you to create a cPanel for each user.

Hey, I got an addon domain, but I cannot figure out how to upload my second website. Can you help me?

HostGator
Make an FTP connection to your primary domain name, and then go inside the addon folder (typically named public_html/domain.com).

Now upload the files.

I have created an addon domain. Do I use the same name server assigned to my first domain website? If I do I get addondomain.originaldomain.com.
But I want my addon domain to stand alone as a website. It is totally unrelated to my original domain website.
Do I have to get separate name servers to accomplish this or will my addon domain appear as a separate website without the extension name of the original doman?

HostGator
Simply use the same name servers as your primary domain, and the addon domain will work as a stand-alone site.
