When making major changes to your account, it's important that you follow the proper procedures and know what to expect. To ensure that the process goes as smoothly as possible, please be sure to read the following articles before making any changes to your primary domain:

Shared Accounts and Reseller Accounts

To change your primary domain name:

Click Here for the New Portal Experience

  1. Log into your Customer Portal at https://portal.hostgator.com/
    • If you cannot remember your password, click on the Forgot Password link below the login area, then follow the instructions emailed to the primary email address on file.
  2. In the My Account Tab, select the Packages icon:

  3. Select the Actions menu on the package you wish to update, and select Change my Domain.

  4. Enter the new domain name you wish to use:

Note: This will only change the domain setup on the server. This step will not register your new domain. You can always register a new domain name with HostGator at register.hostgator.com
  5. Select the Update Domain button.

You will receive a notification indicating that your domain change was successful, as illustrated below.

Error Message - Addon Issues

The notification below indicates that you have an additional service tied to your package, such as GoMobi or SiteLock, and you will not be able to change the primary domain name of the associated package from within your Customer Portal. This error occurs because the additional service is directly configured to work on a specific domain name.

If you receive the above error, please contact us via phone or Live Chat, and our Billing administrators will be happy to assist you.

Windows Shared

In order to change the primary domain name on a Windows Shared hosting package the above steps in the Billing Portal are required. After you have completed the steps shown in the above section, please proceed to update your domain name within your Plesk control panel by following the steps below.

Note: This change must be done in both the Billing Portal and your Plesk control panel.

To change your primary domain name within Plesk:

  1. Login to your Plesk control panel.

  2. Select your primary domain name in the Websites & Domains section of Plesk, as illustrated below:

  3. Click on the Host Settings link towards the top of the page, as shown below:

  4. Enter your new primary domain name and select OK towards the bottom of the page.

Your site should now have all the same content, but a new URL.

Dedicated and VPS

Dedicated and VPS packages are initially provisioned with the domain name chosen at the time of your sign up. This domain name gets assigned as your hostname and updating this requires complex modifications to your server's configuration.

If you would like HostGator to make this change for you, please contact us via phone or Live Chat. There is no charge for this service.

Changing Addon and Subdomain Names

Note: These changes are not done within the billing portal.

You will not need HostGator's billing tool to create or change your subdomains, addon domains or parked domains for packages using cPanel. All HostGator cPanel packages allow for unlimited subdomains, addon domains and parked domains.

For more information on managing subdomains, addon domains and parked domains, see the following article:

How to Change an Addon Domain Name and Keep the Content:

  1. Register your new domain name.
  2. Login to your HostGator cPanel.
  3. In the Domains section, click the Addon Domains icon.
  4. Write down the "document root" for the old addon domain. This path is the location in which the website files for the domain are stored.
For additional information on document root folders, please refer to the following article:

  5. Remove the addon domain with the old name.
  6. Create a new addon domain with the new name, but use the old "document root" (which you wrote down) as the new document root value.

Your site should now have all the same content, but a new URL.
