How do I login to the control panel with a Mac?

HostGator
It does not matter what kind of computer you have at home. It only matters what type of hosting you buy.

According to this article, you will login a specific way, depending on your type of hosting. Please read the appropriate related article.

Which control panel do I use if I'm I changed my nameservers to the ones I received in my welcome email, my old host? Or HostGator's.

And - Do I receive HostGator's services (such as their bandwith, and their rules) or do I have to stick with my old host's rules and their bandwith?

HostGator
Currently, you have two hosting companies and you can use both.

Once you change your nameservers, the first 48 hours is a period of propagation. During this time, you should NOT use your domain name to reach your control panel. HostGator provides you an IP address so you can login correctly. >> See Related Articles. <<

After the 48 hours of propagation, your domain name will be using only HostGator's services (including our bandwidth and our TOS). This is when it is safe to cancel your old host.

How come must i pay to register another domain? isnt it UNLIMITED?

HostGator
Mornay, we offer to HOST an unlimited number of your domains, but you still have to register each name.

So, we let you host unlimited websites, but you have to own the domain name if you want to use it. You must register each domain name with a company who follows ICANN regulations, and you must pay a registration fee each year in order to continue using each domain name.

I just want to log in. I expect to see a LogIn or SignIn sign. This is the first time I've come across a situation where I must log in in one of 4 different ways ... without a LogIn sign! Surely my log in details will tell your system which Control Panel I should be logging into. So why can't I just log in, and your system automatically sends me to the correct Control Panel!?! Sounds stupid, but I don't know which Control Panel I should be logging into. (I haven't used your system for a while). If I can't log in, how can I find out which Control Panel I should be using? By the way, I've been going round in circles looking for a LOGIN sign. Eventually I found your unuseful reply by googling on "Hostgator where do i sign in?"!

HostGator
AnthonyP, you have a classic case of making the situation too difficult.

Now is the time to call us; our phone number is displayed at the top of every page.

If that is not an option, join our live chat room. There is a button at the top right corner of every page.

I apologize, but there is no way for us to simply create a Sign In button. We host thousands of servers, and you must login to the correct one. (A username is only unique per server. Someone else on a different server can have the same username as you.)

AnthonyP
When I talked about a SignIn button, of course this includes both User Name and Password. I think there are many entities that have millions of accounts yet display only one SignIn button (with 2 ID requirements). Indeed, I know of, and use, one bank that has a single SignIn button and automatically takes you to your bank account or credit card account depending on which User and Password you key in. I'm disappointed that you, acting on behalf of such a well-known entity as yours, should claim that it is impossible to have a single entry point, instead of four. This is just a matter of system design. (Even if different people on different servers have the same username, they will have different passwords). You might like to mention this problem to your systems people in the hope that this problem can be addressed.

HostGator
I will try to explain it the best way.

There are not 4 different login points, there are thousands. The login method simply depends on your type of hosting.

I am sure at your bank, they assign you a username that is unique. However, at HostGator we allow you to pick your username.

Now imagine a place like Yahoo or AOL where you get to pick your username and there are millions of users signing in at one login point. All of the good usernames are taken! You get stuck with bonjovi12191969 because every username must be unique.

Because HostGator allows you to pick your username and gives you a login point which is only used by a small fraction of our clients, you can choose from the usernames you want.

Now consider that we sell reseller accounts and those customers of ours create their own login names and passwords. If everyone on a HostGator server was required to have a unique username, then our resellers would face a terrible inconvenience. Username already taken. Username already taken. Username already taken. Username already taken....

We have 2.2 million domains hosted here, so even if we assumed no two people would ever pick the same password and tried your idea, customers would be waiting a long time while the computer searches thousands of servers for a matching username and password. Also, consider what would happen if your server was not responding at that time; you would be waiting until every server is checked, and then your login would either fail, or start all over with the first server.

Trust me, if there is any way to make your experience easier, I am the first person to step up and recommend change. I just know this is not plausible.

would like to user questions and hostgator responses and proferr one point relevant to anthonyp's inquiries... banks use proprietary networks and "non-web" server technologies for financial transactions and account maintenance; just because you can login from the world wide web doesn't mean their backend is using it; the reason you can login from the generic portal is their systems are solid-state and the back end remains reliable within itself; when you can't login or have problems, as all of us do with online banking, it is because the secure backend is having i/o problems with their public access i.e.-world wide web servers interfacing with their private backend... there's huge firewalls there, sir.... so, banks can do this because they have specially isolated equipment and systems; hosting companies keep all their equipment and systems as closely linked to the open world wide web as possible and everything hostgator has said is 100% accurate, though i do not want to diminish anthonyp's questioning... gads, who would have ever expected someone to "defend" online banking!? =D

HostGator
I am working on this highly demanded feature.

When our proprietary billing system is ready, we will be able to have one login for each customer (same as our current billing system); however, our new system will be customizable.

Then we can put all your known control panel links inside for easy access. Also, I will push to get the new billing login area on our main site.

Please wait patiently as we finish developing and debugging the new system, then your request for one login area will be possible.

Really great questions and equally great answers. Not your typical robotic answers and that's GOOD!

I have created a subdomain and uploaded the files to the folder, when iI tried to browse the subdomain pages shows 404 error. What might be the problem

HostGator
I suspect you have a DirectoryIndex line in your /public_html/.htaccess file which defines the default page for your primary website.

To solve this, the easiest solution is to find this line of code and add a space at the end, followed by the name of the file which will be used on your subdomain.

EXAMPLE: DirectoryIndex index.html home.html

I created my website on my Mac with iWeb, but lost it due to a fatal event to my computer. I tried to get to my website to make some changes and updates, through file maker at my hosting firm,Hostgator.
I am used to see my page and work on it directly, but at file maker I pick a file and when I open it, it just gives me codes and text lines. I don't know what to do with that.
Is there any Mac user out there that had a similar situation? I don't know how to get back into what I have created on my mac. all is gone, except for the files on hostgator. How does one work on the pages if they don't open as a page?

HostGator
You can use the "HTML Edit" option instead. This allows you to edit without seeing all the confusing code.
